Feryal rates a classic Mediterranean garden

In our Rate This Garden series, the Secret Gardens design team looks at inspiring outdoor spaces and breaks down what makes them work. In this episode, Feryal reviews a classic Mediterranean garden and gives it an impressive score.

So what earns a garden a near-perfect score? Let’s walk through the details Feryal picked out, and how you can bring the same ideas to your own home.

“I would grade this garden 9.5. Mediterranean style is always my favourite style.”

— Feryal, Secret Gardens

Why Mediterranean Style Works So Well

Mediterranean gardens are timeless. They draw on warm, natural materials, relaxed planting and a strong connection between the home, the garden and the water. The style suits sunny climates naturally, which is why it translates so well to villas in the UAE.

“I can see this garden being built in a community like Jumeirah Golf Estate. Very classic.”

The Right Balance of Green and Hardscape

“There is like the right amount of green and hardscape.”

This balance is one of the most important parts of any successful garden. Too much hardscape and the space feels harsh and hot. Too much planting and it can feel overgrown or hard to use. Here, paved areas for living and moving around are softened by greenery, so the garden feels both practical and lush.

Cobblestones for a Natural Look

The garden uses cobblestones around the villa, which Feryal says “made it look a little bit more natural.” Cobblestones bring texture, character and a sense of age that smooth, uniform paving can’t match. They help a new garden feel settled and authentic, as if it has always been there.

Organic Natural Stone Steps

“The steps here are organic. They’re made of natural stone.”

Rather than sharp, perfectly geometric steps, this garden uses natural stone with an organic shape. It’s a small detail that makes a big difference, softening level changes and helping the hardscape blend into the planting around it.

Feryal notes that this idea is easy to adapt: “We can also use the same kind of steps, whether it be in natural stone or porcelain tiles.” Porcelain gives a similar look with a different set of practical benefits, so there are options for different budgets and maintenance preferences.

A Skimmer Pool That Flows With the Garden

The swimming pool is a skimmer-style pool, and Feryal sees it as an idea that “can be implemented in other projects in Dubai.” What makes it stand out is the continuity of finishes: the same tiles used on the surrounding floor continue into the pool, creating a seamless flow between the deck and the water.

The Secret to That Turquoise Water

“Always beige tiles will give you this kind of blue turquoise water colour.”

Many homeowners don’t realise how much the pool finish affects the colour of the water. Lighter, warm-toned tiles like beige give that inviting, resort-style turquoise that suits a Mediterranean garden so well.

Greenery and a Mature Olive Tree

“Infusing greenery with this is just giving it a natural organic look.”

The highlight is a mature olive tree, which Feryal guesses could be around 50 years old. Olive trees are a signature of Mediterranean gardens. A mature specimen adds instant character, structure and a sense of history, and works as a natural focal point that anchors the space.
