Isobel on what luxury really means outdoors

What makes a garden feel luxurious? Many people assume it’s about having more: more features, more materials, more statement pieces. But in this episode of Let’s Talk Design, Isobel from the Secret Gardens design team offers a different view.

True luxury is quieter and more considered. Here are the principles Isobel shares for creating a garden that feels high-end in the truest sense.

“Luxury design isn’t about adding more, it’s about the small details and making the right design choices.”

— Isobel, Secret Gardens

Quality Over Quantity

A garden filled with features can quickly feel busy and overwhelming. A garden with fewer, better elements feels calm, confident and refined. Instead of asking “what else can we add?”, luxury design asks “what does this space really need, and how can we do it beautifully?”

Negative Space Is Part of the Design

“Negative space is part of the design and not every area needs something.”

Negative space is the open, empty area around and between elements: a clear stretch of lawn, an uncluttered terrace, a calm expanse of water. It gives the eye somewhere to rest and lets the key features stand out. Some of the most luxurious spaces in the world are defined as much by what’s left out as by what’s included.

Choose Timeless Materials That Age Well

Trends change quickly, but a luxury garden should look as good in ten years as it does on the day it’s finished. That’s why Isobel recommends choosing “materials that are timeless and will age well.” Natural stone, quality porcelain and well-chosen finishes have lasting appeal, and many develop character over time.

The Smallest Details Make the Biggest Difference

“The smallest details can make the biggest difference to any project.”

Luxury is often found in the details most people don’t consciously notice but definitely feel: how two materials meet, the alignment of paving joints, the finish on a pool edge, the way lighting picks out a tree at night, the proportion of a step.

Complementary, High-Quality Materials

“Choosing materials that are complementary and high quality will have a huge impact to your project.”

A restrained palette of materials that complement each other in colour, texture and tone creates harmony throughout the garden. When stone, tiles, timber and planting all work as one, the space feels cohesive and intentional.

Invest Where You Live Every Day

“Invest in areas that you experience every day, such as the pool, maybe the outdoor kitchen or even the planting.”

The pool
Often the heart of the garden and the place you’ll spend the most time

The outdoor kitchen
Where you cook, entertain and gather with family and friends

The planting
Which shapes the mood, shade and atmosphere of the whole space

Bringing Resort Life Home

“It’s about building that resort life in your home.”

Think of the feeling you get at a great resort. It’s calm, effortless and beautifully considered, with nothing out of place and everything working together. That’s what luxury garden design aims to create, right outside your own door.
